Berlin by Bicycle-Third Reich; Berlin Wall
Berlin, the capital city of Germany, is rich with art, culture and history, but will forever be associated with the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist Party. Thankfully, the most important sites related to the Third Reich are situated close together in the city centre and well served by a network of cycle paths, so the best way to see them is by bicycle. Berlin attractions, of course, include the Berlin TV Tower, which rises to a height of 1,197 feet above Alexanderplatz, the centre of former communist East Berlin and can be seen from all over the city. Next stop on your private bike tour of Berlin might be the Red City Hall, also located in the Mitte district of the city, near Alexanderplatz. The Fountain of Neptune, a baroque fountain in bronze and granite, commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II, between the Red City Hall and St. Mary’s Church. Moving south along the Unter den Linden Boulevard on your tour by bike in Berlin, you arrive at the Brandenburg Gate, the most famous landmark in the city and, for almost 28 years, a symbol of German division during the Cold War. In 1961, when the Berlin Wall was erected, access to the Brandenberg Gate, located in what was East Berlin, was cut off. The Berlin Wall once snaked for 43 kilometres, approximately south to north, through the city but, apart from certain relics, such as the watchtower in Kreuzberg or East Side Galery it has been demolished. No tour of Berlin by bicycle would be complete without a visit to the Reichstag building, which now houses the modern German parliament, the Bundestag, just north of the Brandenburg Gate. Moving south again on your tour of Berlin by bike, the Holocaust Memorial commemorates the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis during World War II. The Reich Chancellery bunker, or Führerbunker, in which Hitler spent his final hours, stands nearby, while further south, the Checkpoint Charlie Museum commemorates the former border crossing and life behind the Iron Curtain.
